Wide Area Routers

With Route Manager Software

For TCP/IP and AppleTalk Phase 2 Networks

  • Interconnects two LocalTalk networks or one Ethernet network to remote networks using high-speed synchronous serial data devices
  • Supports IP and AppleTalk Phase 2 protocols
  • Supports RS-232, RS-422, or V.35 interfaces
  • Configurable from anywhere on the network with Route Manager Software

MultiRouter wide-area routers provide an easy way to expand your network to include remote sites. Two or more MultiRouter wide-area routers, linked by synchronous serial data services such as those provided by your phone company, can bring together remote Ethernet and LocalTalk networks.

MultiRouters are completely compatible with all leading products using the IP or AppleTalk Phase 2 protocols. Users can share files and printers, send and receive mail, and perform other functions as they would on a single network.

MultiRouters provide direct memory access support for all ports, leaving the router's processor free to perform high-level routing functions that increase network performance.

MultiRouter wide-area serial synchronous routers support both Ethernet-to-serial and LocalTalk-to-serial interconnections. Plug-in modules let you upgrade your unit easily to increase performance. You can also use MultiRouter wide-area routers in combination with MultiRouter local-area routers to increase the size of your on-site network.

LocalTalk and Ethernet Interconnections

MultiRouter LT/Sync routers interconnect one or two LocalTalk networks to remote networks through a synchronous serial data service such as DDS or T1. For greater flexibility, the router supports local-area networks using either LocalTalk or telephone cabling.

The MultiRouter LT/Sync handles multiple protocols on LocalTalk networks transparently. For networks using only the AppleTalk protocol, the routers function as simple plug-and-play units. For TCP/IP networks, they support encapsulation for routing to/from LocalTalk networks.

MultiRouter EN/Sync routers interconnect Ethernet networks or network backbone to remote networks using a synchronous serial data service such as DDS or T1. An LT/Sync unit can be upgraded to an EN/Sync unit as your networking needs grow.

Both models are designed to interconnect easily with standard data services. They connect to a standard CSU/DSU, T1 multiplexer, channel bank, or other device using an RS-232, RS-422, or V.35 interface at data rates up to 2 megabits per second.

All MultiRouters include IP subnetting, which allows any LocalTalk or Ethernet segment to be configured as an IP subnet. Routes can be user-defined static routes or learned using the Routing Information Protocol (RIP). The routers can be managed with the industry-standard Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP).
